The date of the monastery`s foundation is disputed, although local monks
assert that it originated as early as the 8th century but was abandoned when Byzantium lost its hold on the region. The current monastic
establishment dates back to the 15th century. It is said that an icon of Mary
the mother of Jesus illuminated by a candle miraculously appeared high on the
cliffs where a cave temple was carved out later. Being located next to mosques,
this Christian monastery was visited and revered even by Moslems. Just like
travelers a few centuries ago you can drink water from the local Holy Spring.
